Giahni Ruiz | Saint Mary's Softball Athlete

Saint Mary’s Knights Softball | Class of 2025

Giahni Ruiz started playing softball when she was five years old. What got her into the game was simple — she watched her cousins play baseball and wanted to join in. From there, it just made sense. She picked up a glove and never looked back.

At Saint Mary’s High School, Giahni played third base — a role that called for someone grounded, alert, and reliable. She also took snaps on the football field as a quarterback for the Knights’ flag football team, helping them go 14–0 and win a state championship in the program’s first official season.

She didn’t bring up records or titles in our interview — instead, she gave credit to her parents. “They always push me to play multiple sports and to try my hardest in all that I do,” said Giahni. That quiet humility says just as much as the record does.

When asked who had the biggest influence on her softball development as a high school athlete, Giahni doesn’t hesitate.

“On the field, Coach Espinoza has encouraged me the most. Off the field, I would say my parents,”she said.

As for where her competitive fire comes from, she points to her mom without hesitation.

“She’s always pushed me to be better,”Giahni said.

When asked about her most memorable moment as a senior this season, she said:

“Senior Night. The whole team was hitting and the dugout was loud. We all showed out and did what we had to do to win.”

Giahni has been selected to play in the AZSCA All-Star Game, set for Wednesday, May 28th at Red Mountain High School, with first pitch scheduled for 5:30 PM. For her, the honor is about more than recognition — it’s a final chance to wear the green and white with pride, and reflect on everything the game has taught her. It’s clear that those lessons go beyond the softball diamond. “One error on the field isn’t the end of the world,” she said. “That goes for life, too. You just keep working to get better.”

Giahni was asked what advice would she give to a younger player who might one day suit up as a Saint Mary’s Knight.

She keeps it real: “Don’t give up. You’ll have setbacks. You’ll have doubt. But keep showing up, and keep growing," she said.
